Girl Power

Ten years ago we had the spice girls thrusting peace signs all over the place and doing high kicks, now we have the age of kick ass women super heroes and spies. Angelina Jolie's new film Salt just hit theaters and she's not the only one throwing some punches and handling some crazy weapons. In December Tron Legacy is due to come out with Olivia Wilde, who is in a league of her own when it comes to being a kick ass woman, I mean her character on House is bi-sexual so Olivia is all about choosing strong smart women who just don't care. The movie is a sequel to the original Tron, which came out about 30 years ago, and although the main character in the sequel is a dude, I think Olivia is going to definitely draw some attention, she was just at comic con promoting the film.

Another film that has been promoted at comic con is Sucker Punch, which really does star a woman, or rather women. Unfortunately we have to wait about a year for this film to be released but from the trailer it looks super intense and a little dark. It has been described as Alice and Wonderland with machine guns, enough said I was sold with the mention of Alice and Wonderland.

Comic con also showed some footage of Natalie Portman's film Thor, which is based off a comic and although I haven't seen a trailer anything with Natalie Portman can only be amazing, I mean she was freakin Padme from Star Wars!

Now if only they would start working on a Wonder Woman movie...

More Stop Motion...Who's Excited

So for those of you who have been following my blog you know that I am a real admirer of stop motion videos, and the one I am going to talk to you about today is for a Levi's jean ad (another thing I admirer- good advertising).

The video is of this guy walking across America in Levi's jean. Although the stop motion isn't the best, it doesn't follow his every step because I mean if it did the video would be days long, but it has a nice concept to it. The best parts are when you see things you recognize like the Brooklyn Bridge, which is where he starts (gotta love NY) and the Lincoln Memorial in D.C. The guy, whose name is Mike finally finishes his journey in San Fran, again a great location to finish off much better than ending in L.A.

What also makes this video great is the fact that the background music is Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, can't go wrong there, especially if it's their song 'Home', which seems extremely fitting for this video.

Enjoy!

I've Got Ideas

Just because I am ordinary doesn't mean I can't do things. What, you think the rags to riches story only happens in fairy tales, well just look at J.K Rowling, she went from being an ordinary person to a gazillion heir because she stuck with the ideas she created. So why can't that happen to me? I will tell you why, it's because I don't have support behind me. I love my family and my parents but for some reason whenever I suggest an idea all they have to say to me is, "wow, that's a great idea, keep coming up with ideas." Okay...thanks?! That's all you have to say? How about "wow that's amazing, now stick with it and make it happen." Some encouragement would be nice. People like J.K Rowling stuck with their ideas and now look at them, you can't give up. So, I am going to make sure that my ideas are taken to the next level because you know what, they are good. So, here I go beginning my very own comic book. I feel like by writing it down it will make me stick with it and actually see it through. I may not be the next J.K Rowling but I will never know unless I try. Oh, and if you are an up and coming artist who can draw cartoons message me! Because we can work on this thing together and who knows what will happen, but I will leave you with this, I have ideas.

Fun at Work...is that an oxymoron?

No it isn't, well at least not for me, because yesterday at work N.E.R.D came to the office and gave a little performance and they were unreal. Now I am not a huge fan of rap, and have never really listened to N.E.R.D. I know who Pharell is but after seeing their performance yesterday I am totally obsessed. I almost think their live show was better than the recordings. They just have so much energy and even though I am not much of a dancer I found myself actually dancing, yes not just doing a little toe tap but actually moving my hips. So in the spirit of my new found discovery, although I'm sure most of you have been ahead of the game for some time now you can watch their video for Hot-N-Fun, which was my favorite from yesterdays set list.

Working Gal

I am sorry I haven't posted in a while, actually a while is an understatement, but this working thing is not that easy. In case you were wondering, or even if you weren't I am going to tell you anyways, I have been interning at MTV this summer. Sorry that's all the information you are going to get (creepers).

But, besides working I haven't really been doing much, just the usual ordinary stuff, playing tennis and listening to an obsessive amount of music. Besides the warm weather, the summer is the best time for new music. Is it just me or was music made for summer, or is it vice-versa?

So lets recap some of my new favorite summer music. The first band is called Sleigh Bells and the lead singer Alexis Krauss is actually a teacher on the side. Um...can you be my teacher, you seem pretty cool to me? Alexis' vocals paired with Derek E. Miller on guitar are totally unique. I don't even know who to compare the them to, which I think says it all. They are totally different, but if this helps M.I.A signed them to her label. Listening to their song Kids (one of my faves) and Tell 'Em just makes me think of being an undercover super hero who is acting like an ordinary person and walking down the city street. Maybe this image comes to my head because when I was listening to their album on repeat I was also reading the Graphic Novel, Y The Last Man. But who cares, they are awesome and their next album cover should totally be them as super heroes.

Another band that I have developed a new love for, although they have been around for a while and I just happen to be behind in the times is Portugal. The Man. I actually went to their free show at Governors Island and was blown away. I immediately proceeded to buy their albums and let me just say this they are better live. They are amazing and for those of you who have been kept in the dark like me you should stop what you are doing now and visit their myspace page.

That's all for now, but I will be back hopefully sooner than later.

Vimeo

So Vimeo has been around for quite some time now, but it took me a little while to find it. Well, technically I have seen it before but I never really explore it. But today I have, and it is probably one of the coolest websites out there (if you like graphic designing, stop motion, or some short clever virals). I guess the website pretty much caters perfectly to my interests. So like the awful student and digital enthusiast that I am I spent some time on the website looking at some really clever videos. For those of you who are to busy to check it out I thought I would upload a couple for your pleasure to watch. But, when you do get the time you should really check it out, there are some really talented people out there that deserve to be noticed.

This first video was created by two students in Paris. It is just an overall lovely video.

Reulf from Charlesque on Vimeo.

Now if you thought that video was remarkable, wait until you've seen this one, which was created by Sam O'Hare. This video will literally blow your mind.

The Sandpit from Sam O'Hare on Vimeo.

Now I don't know if you realized but that was not the actual city but a model. Can you imagine moving those tiny people about a centimeter for who knows how many actual frames he had to take. MIND BLOWN! Am I right? How unreal is that?

Don't Place me in a Box!

You know what I hate. When people decide to put you into these nice little boxes. You're a jock so you can't be an artist, or you're a musician so you can't be an athlete. How is that fair? Why do we have to be one of the other and not both!

I like fashion and art and I am also a jock. Someone told me the other day that they can't see me as being a photographer because I am the number one tennis player. That really ticked me off because I don't want people to just perceive me as that one thing. People change, something that I have definitely done since being in London. So don't go telling me that you can't see me as how I want to be seen because I am good at tennis. That shouldn't mean anything.

For any of you who have had a similar dilemma I have attached the new Vampire Weekend video for one of their new songs, Giving Up The Gun. Just watch it, it makes me feel better and I hope it will do the same for you.

See you can be a little hipster and a tennis player. Thank you Vampire Weekend for understanding me better than my friends.

Stop Motion

For those of you who liked the last stop motion video I posted, I thought I would treat you with another one I found while browsing the internet. Yes, I know I am a dork I browse the internet looking for cool things, but trust me after seeing this you will be thankful.

Also happy anniversary Miracle on Ice Day! Sorry just had to throw that in there as I write this while watching the USA vs. Canada hockey game.

2010 Olympics

Lately I have been watching the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, which is probably why my homework isn't getting done.

However, I am not here to talk to you about my poor work ethic instead I want to talk about the winter Olympic sports. What I have noticed at these Olympics is that half of these sports I have never heard of, or have never really given much thought to. Biathlon, curling? And yet here these sports are being broadcasted for the world to see. And what's really interesting is that the people who participate in these sports are ordinary people. Yes, they are Olympians but what I mean by ordinary is that if you were to be walking down the street most of you wouldn't recognize them.

So I have been thinking about this a lot lately and have decided that I want to be an Olympian. I think that if I were to switch over to some bizarre sport that no one really knows of I could actually have a chance. Of course I am just messing with you all, but in reality I have a lot of respect for these people and really would love to have been an Olympian. However, if I could pick a sport to participate in for the winter Olympics it would probably have to be boardercross. First of all snowboarding is awesome, and second of all you are racing against other people, which means that it is a clear win. You don't have to worry about subjective judging.

On a plus note I could totally see myself as a boarder chick.

The Appeal of Chatroulette

Now I am a huge digital enthusiast, I love twitter, flickr, facebook and youtube, but I am not exactly sure about how I feel about chatroulette.

To me it just seems like a modern day chat room. Remember those things they had through AOL, where you could meet random people and type to them and most of the time they would end up being creepy forty year old married men. Now with chatroulette you are not only typing to them but seeing them and in all the wrong contexts.

So I guess what I don't understand is where is the appeal? Why would you sit in front of your computer screen and put yourself in those types of situations?

The one plus that I can see is the chance of running into someone famous. But then again how can you tell if that's really them?

Although it may sound like I am judging I am really not. I just want to know why people like it? I used to think twitter was stupid and now look at me, I tweet about three times a day. So please leave comments and let me know why you do or do not like chatroulette. I am open to anything, so who knows maybe one day I will try it out.

College Student

Despite what people tell you, being a college student is not as exciting as it sounds. Forget the movies, we aren't as cool and hip as they make us out to be. Instead we are quite ordinary and spend most of our time doing homework and my major guilty pleasure watching youtube videos. I swear youtube must have been invented for college students. When we don't want to do work and are looking for means of procrastinating we are either spending our time on facebook, catching up on tv shows through Hulu or finding bizarre/funny/talented viral videos on youtube.

The other day my roommate was showing me this really cool stop motion video. Stop motion is a video made out of photographs that are staggered perfectly so it appears that the person is moving, when really all that has been done is that someone has taken a photograph moved about an inch and then taken another one, so on and so forth. Pretty much your modern day flip book.

This is the video my roommate showed me, can you believe how much time and effort must have gone into making this video. It is pretty unreal and unbelievable. My roommate and her boyfriend actually want to make their own stop motion video and if they ever do, you will be the first to know about it. Who knows maybe I can actually convince them to let me help out, possibly pick out a kick ass background song.

Doppleganger Week

So I know doppleganger week is over, but I was reading someone's blog the other day about it and something they said really interested me. The writer mentioned that we are all ordinary so there is no point trying to tell ourselves we all look like these people. Think about it, if we all look like these famous people well then technically you are really ordinary. But, we thankfully don't. I know we are kind of bummed that we don't look like Jennifer Aniston or Megan Fox, but what we have is something better than that, we are ordinarily special. If we all looked like them then we wouldn't be individuals. Looking different then a famous person isn't a curse, but a good thing. Plus if we looked like them then they wouldn't be special either.

I know we all want to look like celebrities at one point in our lives, they are beautiful and talented, I want to look like Twiggy. But if I really did look like Twiggy then I wouldn't be me. I am an ordinary person but that's what makes me special and well me.

So embrace your inner ordinary and when the next doppleganger week comes along say screw it and keep your profile picture the way it is.

*Oh and I added a picture of Twiggy just because well she is amazing, so enjoy :).

Super Bowl 44

What a great win for the Saints! I was rooting for them the entire time, mostly because Peyton Manning and the Colts beat the Jets, but also because it's a great win for the city and the team. First times the charm right?

But what I really want to talk about are the advertisements. Was anyone else a little bit disappointed with them? I mean Doritos and Bud Light, seriously? A man with a Dorito's ninja costume? And all of Bud Light's commercials in general were just trying too hard to be funny and well they failed, big time.

Personally, my favorites were of course the e*trade babies, and the the Brett Favre one was quite funny, I mean I am a Jets fan and the man was making fun of himself. However, probably the best one was the add with Tracy Morgan and Stevie Wonder for VolksWagon.

Don't you remember the game "Punch Buggy No Punch Back"? Well now it's "VolksWagon no Punch Back". Got to love it!

First off the song is great! Grizzly Bear's Two Weeks, what a brilliant song to put in a commercial! And then the add just ends with a bang having Tracy Morgan get punched by Stevie Wonder. Very clever.

What were your favorite commercials?

Video Blog

Okay so I have been thinking about creating my own video blog, to practice film editing, something I am really interested in. Only problem is, I don't have anything to video blog about. I have been doing some research, and by that I mean watching peoples' video blogs that have gotten a lot of hits for some inspiration. And you want to know what I have discovered? That video blogging is a lot like regular blogging just through voice. But I still feel like I would feel weird speaking out the thoughts in my head instead of writing them down, I don't know, maybe it's the fact that when writing you can delete some things easily.

Well, it's a work in progress. If you have any video blogging ideas I would love to hear them. Thanks world!

Great Music Exchange of 2010

So the great music exchange of 2010 happened on Saturday night, three best friends, three different music playlists.

Here's some of the great music I got out of it:

Animal Collective: What a band! Their new album Merriweather Post Pavillion is one of the best things I have heard in a while. Especially the song My Girls, which makes you feel like everything around you going in slow motion.

Heartless Bastards: My friend Skylar introduced me to this band and I immediately liked them right off the bat. The album starts off good with Into the Open and just keeps getting better and better. The lead singer, Erika Wennerstrom, has one of the coolest voices I have ever heard. It is so different then normal women singers, but it blends perfectly with the music.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs: You cannot make a list of amazing music without including the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. And there new album It's Blitz is proof that a band can get better in age.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals: Probably one of my new favorite artists. After seeing them play live at school I had to buy there second album. They are phenomenal, and for a Florence and the Machine fan, Grace kind of reminds me of an American version of Florence Welch. There music isn't similar but the energy they bring to the stage is similar.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

On Sunday, Skylar forced me to go the Grace Potter and the Nocturnal's concert that was on campus. I was only forced because I had a lot of homework that needed to get done but I am so glad I took a homework break for the concert.

Oh my God! What a concert it was! It was unbelievable and Grace Potter is probably one of the coolest people ever. She was rocking out like there was no tomorrow, dancing around stage without a care in the world. And her outfit, if only I had brought my camera so you could have seen it. She was wearing a bright magenta sparkly dress and looked so out of place amongst her long haired beard wearing band mates, but at the very same time like she belonged.

You want to know what the coolest thing about Grace Potter, besides her unbelievable talent, she went to St. Lawrence for two years before dropping out to pursue her music career. But St. Lawrence is where the band came together, it makes me proud to be a Laurentian. It is a nice little reminder that if you take matters into your own hands and control your own life you can do whatever you want.

Thank you Grace Potter for reminding me of that.

Let Me Catch You Up

I know I haven't posted in a while, but junior year of college is not easy. I seriously have not had a free minute to myself, not even this weekend.

So let me catch you up on my ordinary life that is a stressed out college student. Over the weekend instead of staying on campus I decided to take a mini road trip with my bff Skylar to see our other bff Carolyn who transferred from SLU to RIT. I know you are all probably wondering why I didn't stay on my own campus for the first weekend back but I just couldn't. After being abroad the party life at school just seems immature and unnecessary. You take a step back and you look at it and you say to yourself, "where is the fun in any of this?" I have no idea where it is, and I wasn't planning on looking for it.

In Rochester we didn't do much, I know lame. But it was nice taking a break and just hanging out for a change. We went to the women's RIT basketball game, but probably the best part of our visit was taking a trip to see Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglas' grave stones. I know sweet right?

And the best part is I got some sweet graveyard photos out of it that I am leaking out to you before they will be posted to flickr!

The Internship Process

Since I am in my junior year my goal for this summer is to land a legitimate internship. I tried and failed last year but I am hoping my new enhanced maturity and experience will help me out.

However, there is always this voice inside my head that keeps reminding me that you are not the only one out there looking for an internship and you are by no means the only one with connections. There are millions of kids out there just like you who want the same thing as you and are just as smart as you. So how do you make yourself memorable in a pool of ordinary people?

What I have figured out is that you need to get as much relevant experience as possible while in school. Employers these days are not looking for fresh minds that they can mold, they want minds that have been molded and now need to be finished off.

But how are you supposed to know what you want to do? Isn't that the purpose of the internship? Not anymore. I believe that while you are in school you should join and try as many things as possible. Do you like to writer...join the school paper, like to talk...join the school radio station, like to be the center of attention...join the school's television station. Do it all because eventually you will come upon something you like and from there you can work towards the internship of your dreams and maybe the job of your dreams.

When it comes to the internship process make yourself as far away from ordinary as you possibly can. Here you want to be different.

Possible Internet Glitch

I don't know what it's been lately, but recently I have been getting about 10 hits per day to my usual three. Don't get me wrong I am certainly not complaining, some Internet exposure for my blogs would be nice. However, so far no one has written me any comments. If it's because you don't like what I am writing about please send me comments with things that you want to hear. This blog isn't just supposed to be about me, it's supposed to be about the ordinary people out there reading it. So tell me what you want to hear and I will love to write about it.

Hope to hear from you my anonymous public.

My iPod

Every time someone looks at my iPod I feel like they are judging me. Yes, I do have some Miley Cyrus on there, but Party in the USA is such a catchy tune, and have you ever really listened to the lyrics of The Climb, they are quite beautiful and inspiring. But I do listen to other music too. My new favorite artist is Florence + the Machine, she makes you want to throw your head back and sway and yet at the very same time I can workout to her music at the gym. Norah Jones has also become a new interest mostly because of her new song Chasing Pirates. I mean who wouldn't want to listen to a song with a title that includes the word Pirates. Whenever I listen to her I just picture myself sitting in a meadow, in a floral sun dress with dandelions flying all around me, kind of like the opening scene to My Summer of Love.

Despite having what I like to think, sophisticated taste I still hate when people look at my iPod. My iPod is like a piece of me but I don't think it defines me and that's the scary part. The moment a person takes a look into your Library it is like they think they have figured you out. People are more complicated then their itunes library, they have feelings, and who ever said having eclectic taste was a bad thing.

I Can Dream Right?

I like to think of myself as creative and clever but the truth is I am really neither of these things. When something is on my mind, I don't paint a masterpiece or compose the next great hit. No, what do I do, I talk about it, or in this case write it down. And let's face it, I am not very good at writing.

Thank god for blogs though, it's strange, I was never a big diary person. There is something about writing down how you feel and posting it on the Internet for millions to see. You can be anonymous but at the same time you are writing for a purpose. You are hoping that while googling something your blog will pop up and someone will be intrigued enough to read it. Maybe they will even like it and post it to their twitter or facebook account, giving it more publicity and maybe, just maybe it will circulate around the web so much that some producer will find it and ask you to write their next original screenplay. Just dreams though really, but then again it could happen right?

But of course you need to be a brilliant blog writer, just like you need to be brilliant to compose a music or creative to create a masterpiece that expresses your feelings. I am not brilliant enough at anything, I am good. I am good at taking photographs, good at playing tennis but never brilliant. I never seem to stand out when it matters, and in today's world you need to stand out.

For once I wish I wasn't so ordinary.

London

You know how some people feel like they were born in the wrong decade, some in the wrong bodies...well I feel like I was born in the wrong country. Everything about England, especially London screams Stephanie. From the urban trend spots of Shoreditch to the night life of Camden. I was meant to walk those streets and ride the tube, listen to my iPod and not have to bother with anyone around me. I could feel alone and yet always be surrounded by people, how ideal is that? I could dress anyway I wanted, from black skinny jeans and converse to glittery tops and funky hats and not feel out of place. I could express myself through my clothing and not stick out like a soar thumb. Here, in the suburbs I feel no need to get up and get dressed because I’m not going anywhere. So I get lazy and put on a t-shirt and well of course skinny jeans, but no one sees me anyways. I am 100% alone and the only means of transportation is in my Subaru. I have to actually make an effort to see people and the most socializing I get is when I go to the gym, which is actually one of the only reasons I go. There, I can listen to my music and not have to interact with anyone while still being surrounded with people, something I cherish because it is the closest thing to London.

So here I am, it’s 12 on a Sunday night and I feel myself slipping back into the depression that hit me when I was about to leave London over two weeks ago. I am scared to go back to school because what’s there for me...nothing. You’re in the middle of nowhere in Upstate New York and there is nothing to do. My outfits usually consist of sweatpants and sweatshirts and a pair of snow boots because if it’s not snowing there is either snow on the ground or those are the only shoes that will keep your feet warm. So there is absolutely nothing to look forward to. I feel like the school just sucks out all of your individuality.

I think I can admit this to you, but I sometimes I get tired of being ordinary.

Every Moment Has a Song

I know my last blog posts have been very depressing lately but I blame the weather. So instead of boring you with the lack of activity in my life (today I went to Bed Bath and Beyond and bought toiletries), I thought I would propose a theory I have been thinking of.

You know when you are listening to your iPod on shuffle and you start to dose off and forget about what song you're listening to? Well, I love when that happens because when I eventually tune back in and become cognizant of what song is playing I realize that the song defines the moment. Every moment in your life should have a song that goes with it. I mean moments in movies always have background music so why shouldn't your life.

So the next time you are listening to your iPod on the train or while walking to class think about that moment and how the song that is playing is your song for that moment. You may not be in a movie but why can't we live like we are?

2010 Baby

So now that New Years is over, thank god, I have actually come to terms that it is 2010. What completely blows my mind is the fact that 10 years ago I could not tweet to the entire world about random things in my life that are not interesting and frankly not important, I could not send messages to my friends that looked like emails but were from mobile devices, and I could not sit in front of my computer for hours on end and not get bored (ten years ago if you were sitting in front of your computer for that long it was because of your dial up). Yes, remember dial up; it prevented us from being able to use the house phone and internet at the same time. House phones, do you remember those too?

But anyways, I am quite excited for this new year, I am going to be turning 21 (finally) and I will be one year away from graduating, which although it seems scary I think I am about ready. It's probably because I think once I graduate, my life will become like what is in the movies and won't be so ordinary. But then again I thought that about college and look at me, writing blog posts during my free time. Oh well...some things never change.

Embrace your inner ordinary!
